General Rules (barbless hooks are the #1 cause of fines)
- ⚠ Freshwater fishing in Hawaii has minimal bag limits - freshwater species (tilapia, bass, peacock bass) are generally not regulated by bag limit in most waters.
- ⚠ Marine species have per-species limits in Marine Life Conservation Districts and regulated areas (check regulated areas per island).
- ⚠ No fishing in Hanauma Bay MLCD without permit; many MLCDs are no-take.
- ⚠ Coral and live rock may not be removed.

Pūpūkea-Paumalū MLCD (Oahu)
- No fishing; no take of any marine life.
Manele-Hulopoʻe MLCD (Lanai)
- Fishing restricted per DAR rules.
Honolua Bay MLCD (Maui)
- No fishing.
Lahaina MLCD
- No fishing.
Kahekili MLCD (Maui)
- Fishing restricted.
Freshwater reservoirs (Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Hawaii)
- Freshwater fishing lightly regulated; state stock tilapia, bass, catfish in some reservoirs.

Freshwater: open year-round. Marine: most species year-round with area-specific rules.
Licence Fees
Hawaii does not require a license for recreational saltwater fishing; freshwater fishing in some areas may require permits (check DAR).
